This weekend, we’ve set you up with some engrossing drama series to watch on Amazon Prime Video. Each features a well-structured, character-driven narrative in an immersive world of deeply flawed personalities, solid performances, and strong thematic depth. They’re guaranteed to strike a bingeworthy chord of connection.
Our top pick this weekend is the newly released Nicole Kidman series Scarpetta. Given that it’s one of crime novelist Patricia Cornwell’s most popular adaptations, you’ll want to tune in and see what all the hubbub is about. Before diving into that, though, get your fill of political satire with a John Goodman-led dramedy, followed by a surreal drama with a philosophical vibe that’s sure to make you smile.

Lodge 49
Magical realism with a philosophical vibe
Wyatt Russell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) stars in Lodge 49, a light-hearted, endearing modern fable set in Long Beach, California, executive produced by Paul Giamatti. It’s a charming little show with a positive message at its kooky core—stay connected, brothers. If you’re looking for a place to come in out of the proverbial storm of life, this is it.
Russell is Dud, a disarmingly optimistic local ex-surfer and ex-pool salesman who’s just drifting in the wind in the wake of his father’s death. While looking for any semblance of the idyllic middle-class life he was used to living, Dud stumbles onto a new path when he finds himself on the doorstep of a rundown fraternal building. Lodge 49 offers him a world of cheap beer, easy friendship, and some strange alchemical philosophies that help him confront his deepest fears and greatest hopes.
The surreal drama with hints of magical realism is a critically acclaimed, meditative show that moves at a stoner’s pace, so you need to pay attention to grasp its concept. After a few episodes, though, its subtle observations about capitalist alienation waft to the surface in this charming narrative that combines witty humor with profound themes of grief, community, and finding purpose in a world of low-stakes storytelling. You’ll love its cozy atmosphere, philosophical vibe, unique characters, and sunny aesthetics.

Alpha House
A political satire way ahead of its time
Throw a little comedy in with your drama, courtesy of John Goodman, Clark Johnson, Matt Malloy, and Mark Consuelos, who all star in Alpha House as Republican senators. The political satire, created by Doonesbury’s Garry Trudeau, debuted in 2013 and ran for two seasons, scoring a 79% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.5 out of 10 on IMDB.
When their housemate is hauled off to prison, three Republican senators sharing a row house in D.C. find themselves in need of a new roomie. Enter Andy Guzman, a freshman from Florida. We follow the group as they navigate their humorous, chaotic lives full of managing the pressures of their jobs with their desperate attempts to get re-elected amidst political and ethical scandals.
With a heavy focus on the very human, often flawed side of politicians, Alpha House carries a tone of Veep meets House of Cards. Its witty, character-driven look at the complete absurdity of Washington D.C. culture blends sharp comedy with a clever, realistic, slow-roasting take on the pursuit of continuing a political career in modern-day America. The cast gives exceptional performances, and you’ll see notable cameos from personalities like Bill Murray, Elizabeth Warren, and John McCain. As one of Amazon’s earliest original series, it’s a bingeworthy show ahead of its time and is now more relevant than ever.

Scarpetta
The doctor is in for some gruesome case-solving
Nicole Kidman stars as a forensic badass in Prime Video’s newest series to debut this week, Scarpetta. The highly anticipated crime drama is a serial killer show full of thrills and suspense based on the book series of the same name by famed crime author Patricia Cornwell. All episodes are currently available.
A brilliant forensic pathologist, Dr. Scarpetta is gifted with skilled hands and an unnerving eye in her use of advanced forensic technology to untangle mysteries and solve the toughest of crimes. The eight-episode series seamlessly glides between dual timelines in the doctor’s life, from her beginnings in the late 90s as a chief medical examiner to a present-day murder investigation, where she returns as Virginia’s CME after being ousted years prior. Her first new case calls into question a career-making decision from 28 years ago in this engrossing depiction of gruesome gendercide, dysfunctional families, and the lies that alter perceptions.
Scarpetta is not for the faint of heart, and it doesn’t shy away from the gruesome intricacies of death, cadavers, and autopsies. Much like 1995’s crime thriller Se7en (or Seven), the drama series is dark, graphic, violent, and intense, full of secrets and psychologically shattering incidents. In addition to Kidman, the dramatic thriller also features stellar performances from Jamie Lee Curtis, Bobby Cannavale, and Cannavale’s son, Jake.
