My top pick is television’s longest-running live-action fantasy-horror series ever, at a whopping 15 seasons. The Outpost
An unexpected warrior arises
A four-season, 49-episode fantasy-adventure series originating on The CW, The Outpost follows the lone survivor of a race called “Blackbloods” as she sets out to track her family’s killers. It features the classic revenge plot but without all the extraneous distractions of big-budget Hollywood fantasy productions.
Years after her entire village is destroyed by a gang of brutal mercenaries, Talon (The Librarians: The Next Chapter’s Jessica Green) travels to a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world in search of vengeance. On the way to this outpost, she discovers she’s in possession of a mysterious supernatural power that she must learn to harness if she is to save herself and defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator.
The fast-paced fantasy adventure is comparable to Xena: Warrior Princess and involves high-stakes politics, magical powers, and fight-heavy, escapist fun, with a little cheese thrown in for good measure. No high-budget CGI here. Just compelling revenge plots that expand into a broader story. The show offers a back-to-the-basics fantasy experience reminiscent of 90s shows but set in an intriguing world with unique monsters and a heavy element of deep lore.

Merlin
Someone’s keeping a big secret in Camelot
If you’re down for some epic historical fiction packed with sorcery and action, Merlin is a family-oriented retelling of the King Arthur legend that places a heavy focus on the origins of Merlin and Arthur as well as their relationship.
After arriving in Camelot, a medieval kingdom where magic is punishable by death under King Uther Pendragon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Anthony Head), young Merlin (Humans’ Colin Morgan) seeks to hone his sorcery skills while also keeping them secret. He soon finds himself a simple servant to a young Prince Arthur (Medici: The Magnificent’s Bradley James) and ward to the royal court’s physician, Gaius (One Foot in the Grave’s Richard Wilson), who takes Merlin under his wing and helps him navigate the dangers of the royal court. Over five seasons, Merlin and Arthur grow from mutual disdain to trusted friends and allies, with the mythical warlock guiding the future king towards his destiny.
The lighthearted fantasy series—while a tad slow throughout season one, but that quickly escalates—features a solid blend of adventure and humor with strong character growth and an engaging bromance between the series’ leads. Here, Camelot is completely reimagined and Merlin’s powers concealed, making it a refreshing, comforting watch compared to the gritty atmosphere of modern-day fantasy shows.

Supernatural
The X-Files meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer
With over 300 episodes, Supernatural is the longest-running fantasy-horror series to date. Jared Padalecki (Gilmore Girls) and Jensen Ackles (The Boys) star as demon-hunting brothers who also battle ghosts, monsters, and fallen gods across the U.S. in a 1967 Chevy Impala. Does it have 20-inch blades on it because they’re ballers? You’ll have to watch and see for yourself.
While coping with the death of their mother and friends at the hands of supernatural beings, brothers Sam (Padalecki) and Dean (Ackles) Winchester follow in their missing father’s footsteps and set out to hunt paranormal threats. The highlight of the series, though, is their brotherly bond and willingness to sacrifice everything to save each other, placing great emphasis on the show’s overarching theme that family isn’t just marked by blood but also by choice.
What starts out as an episodic monster-of-the-week show quickly morphs into season-long arcs involving apocalyptic events, the actual apocalypse, heaven, hell, and God himself. It features genuinely great scares, intense character development, and evolving lore that balances emotional stakes with high-stakes supernatural threats. Considering its unique blend of horror, drama, urban legends, and humor, it’s no wonder the show ran as long as it did and amassed the passionate fan community it has. Plus, it features a righteous classic rock soundtrack—perfect for a road trip in a ’67 Chevy.
