Valentine’s Day weekend is here, which means it’s time to prepare for a cozy movie night with a watchlist that will keep you hooked for hours. Netflix has a large library of romantic titles to pick from, so you don’t have to worry about running out of options.
Here are six diverse films that you can add to your Valentine’s Day Netflix watchlist and binge-watch over the weekend.
Lady Chatterley’s Lover
Based on D.H. Lawrence’s novel of the same name, Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a risqué historical romance film. The story follows Connie Reid (The Crown’s Emma Corrin), a young woman married to the wealthy Sir Clifford Chatterley. She becomes trapped in an unfulfilling and draining marriage after he returns from war, paralyzed and emotionally distant, and he suggests to her that she have an affair just to bear him an heir.
Soon, Connie begins an affair with Oliver Mellors (Sinners‘ Jack O’Connell), the gamekeeper on the property. But the two begin falling in love, entangling them in a complicated web of class, wealth, and forbidden love.
Your Place or Mine
Your Place or Mine is a relaxed Valentine’s Day watch that brings a romantic-style similar to The Holiday to your screen. The film follows two lifelong best friends, Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher), who lead very different lives: while Debbie is an overprotective yet loving mother in LA looking to grow her career, Peter is a successful businessman in New York with a hidden dream.
When the pair swap lives and houses after a string of events, they both realize many things about themselves and their feelings toward each other, complicated by their careers and personal priorities.
10DANCE
My foreign language suggestion for your Valentine’s Day Netflix watchlist is the recently released 10DANCE, a Japanese love story based on the manga of the same name. The romantic dance film focuses on the dynamics between Shinya Sugiki, a strict, talented ballroom dance champion, and his namesake, Shinya Suzuki, an easy-going Latin dance champion based in Japan. Despite their rivalry, Sugiki asks Suzuki to have their respective pairs train with each other so they can prepare for the famous 10Dance competition, where both the five standard and five Latin dances need to be performed by the contestants.
The film features some amazing choreography and visuals, as well as a well-done enemies-to-lovers trope with great chemistry between the lead actors.
tick, tick…BOOM!
Musical films can be a thrilling affair, and nothing exhibits this better than tick, tick…BOOM! This semi-autobiographical film, which also marks Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature directorial debut, is based on the stage musical of the same name by Jonathan Larson. The movie explores Larson’s journey writing a musical and entering the theater industry while confronting obstacles in his love life and the ticking pressure of time.
Led by Andrew Garfield, tick, tick…BOOM! is a cathartic story that deals with the fear of failure, love, heartbreak, and the urgency of living life to the fullest. Plus, the soundtrack is addictive, so you have something for your playlist after the credits roll. Garfield’s performance earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
Love, Guaranteed
Love, Guaranteed is a lighthearted romantic comedy about Nick (New Girl’s Damon Wayans Jr.), who decides to sue a dating app (Love, Guaranteed) that promises users they’ll find love or a guarantee that they get their money back after 1,000 unsuccessful and frustrating dates. He hires Susan (She’s All That’s Rachael Leigh Cook), a hardworking, pro bono lawyer, to take on the high-profile case.
As they dig into the app’s claims and meet some of Nick’s mismatched dates, the lawsuit turns into a media spectacle. During the course of the trial, the two slowly start falling for each other, ultimately proving that the app does, in a way, keep its promise.
People We Meet on Vacation
Finally, a new Netflix romance movie you don’t want to miss for your Valentine’s Day streaming is People We Meet on Vacation. Based on Emily Henry’s novel of the same name, this love story follows free-spirited Poppy (My Lady Jane’s Emily Bader) and the man with a plan, Alex (The Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds‘ Tom Blyth). The two opposites have been best friends since college and made a pact to take one vacation together every summer for a week, no matter where they might be in the world.
Over time, their friendship evolves into something more complex when they find themselves developing feelings, leading to tension and angst that bleeds into their summer trips.
