While availability of Sony Xperia handsets has dwindled over the last couple of years, those with the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 IV might be happy to hear that LineageOS support is now available for the hardware.
Released back in 2022, this duo offers the unique 21:9 aspect ratio for Android while still managing to pack in some classic, almost throwback hardware, such as a microSD card slot. Sadly, Sony isn’t always great at getting devices updated, but despite that, the last official OTA for the Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 5 IV as of early 2026 is the stable Android 15 release.
It’s unlikely that either handset will get the recently detailed Android 16 update, which means this could be a way to get your phone up to date with the latest releases. LineageOS 23.0 offers the Sony Xperia 1 IV and 5 IV a way to get a much more recent Android 16 update and paves the way for a future Material 3 Expressive update in the coming months, once certain roadblocks have been overcome – namely, Google’s slow drip of AOSP builds for the latest updates.
Effectively, this means that you can’t yet get the substantial visual overhaul that was added with Android 16 QPR1 via LineageOS right now. The 23.0 builds are based on the June release from last year. This update is devoid of any of the major cosmetic changes that is still technically limited to the Pixel lineup. That said, with Sony unlikely to offer more major updates for the Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 5 IV, LineageOS 23.0 is a great way to keep these phones running for a little while longer.
