Google appears to have filed a patent for a pair of smart glasses that come with a pair of detachable earbuds. Smart glasses seem to be all the rage now, which seems like a bit of a shame for Google and its Google Glass, which may have just been a little too early to catch on like Google was hoping.
These days, brands like Meta with the Meta Ray Ban glasses have helped skyrocket the smart glasses product category into the stratosphere. Google is even taking another crack at smart glasses with its own lightweight models on the way. Of course, these are just smart glasses with built-in speakers, like most options offer. Google’s new patent envisions a pair of glasses that comes with the earbuds attached. It’s an interesting idea, as it sets the consumer up for a combination product that would alleviate having to buy a pair of earbuds. As this is all still technically a rumor, it’s important to take the information with a grain of salt.
Google’s smart glasses patent details earbuds that are detachable
According to the patent, which was discovered by Sudoku Online Pro in partnership with xLeaks7 on X, the new smart glasses show a pair of earbuds that attach to the end of the temple on the glasses. You can see an imagined view of what this might look like in the image below.
Interestingly, the patent describes audio being able to be played through an additional method other than the earbuds. Using bone conduction. “The pair of glasses includes a first speaker configured to deliver sound externally through the air or through bone conduction to an ear of the person,” the patent reads. This suggests that the glasses would provide an option for users to choose how audio plays when interacting with the glasses.
The earbuds may be attached either through magnets or via pogo pin connectors or something similar. The patent appears to mention both, so it’s not clear what would actually end up being used if these ever became a real product. With that said, it’s important to remember that this is just a patent. It may never end up being more than that. Companies file patents all the time that never turn into a real product. That could happen with these glasses as well. However, these do seem like they would be a practical thing to produce. Google is already coming out with new smart glasses. It wouldn’t be too outlandish to release a pair that came with detachable earbuds.
