Apple’s flagship over-ears finally get an upgrade, arriving as a high-fidelity AI companion ahead of the Siri overhaul
Apple has officially unveiled the AirPods Max 2, bringing the long-awaited H2 chip to its premium over-ear headphones.
Available for pre-order on March 25 for $549/£499 and available in early April, the update finally aligns the Max with the smart features found in the AirPods Pro, including Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and a 1.5x improvement in Active Noise Cancellation.
The most significant addition—as far as we’re concerned, anyway—is Live Translation. This allows the headset to act as a real-time bridge during in-person conversations, signaling the brand’s ongoing intent to turn its audio products into smarter AI assistants.
The Max 2 also introduces Siri Interactions, allowing users to respond to announcements by simply nodding or shaking their head.
For creators, the headset now supports 24-bit/48kHz lossless audio via USB-C. And while the design remains largely unchanged, it does introduce five new colors: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
The Wareable take: Intelligence over biometrics
While the AirPods Pro 3 delivers passive health-related features (like Hearing Aid support) and fitness-tracking with its optical sensors, the AirPods Max 2—as it should—remains firmly in the audiophile lane.

Lacking the proximity (and comfort) needed for background health tracking, Apple continues to position these as the ultimate tool for high-fidelity immersion. So, while the Apple Watch and AirPods Pro are the go-to peripherals within the wider Apple monitoring system, the Max will almost certainly remain limited to an AI portal at most.
The addition of Live Translation is important for demonstrating this, showing that Apple still wants the Max to act as a conduit for Siri. However, just how it all shakes out in this regard will depend on the success of that new-and-improved Siri, which is expected to be detailed later this year.
If you were hoping for a total renewal of the AirPods Max focus, this isn’t necessarily it. But, at least on paper, this appears to be the compelling upgrade the line was due for.
