The Apple smartwatch looks to capture the endurance crowd as the race’s official performance technology partner
Apple is moving from the sidelines to the starting block, officially confirming its role as the ‘Official Performance Technology Product Partner’ for the upcoming 2026 TCS London Marathon.
While the Apple Watch has been a ubiquitous sight on runners’ wrists since its 2015 debut, this formal sponsorship signals an intriguing shift in strategy. By taking a central role in the race on 26 April, the brand is directly challenging legacy performance brands like Garmin in the professional endurance space for the first time.
Ever since Apple debuted its dual-frequency GPS via the Ultra line in 2022—a feature that has consistently outperformed the competition in our city marathon comparison tests—the company has been refining its running metrics and chipping away at traditional sports brands’ dominance.
We’ve seen insights into Vertical Oscillation, Stride Length, and custom pacer alerts to align with what serious athletes expect from a device to take them through a full training block (and the 26.2 miles itself), as well as ‘lite’ versions of training load analysis and AI feedback.
The Wareable take: A renewed focus?
By embedding its trackers—which now include the mega-impressive AirPods Pro 3 heart rate monitoring—very visually into the London Marathon’s space, Apple continues to pivot its smartwatch as a capable, ‘proper’ device for those who take on big endurance tests.
And while it could very much prove to be an isolated marketing campaign, it also perhaps hints at what we can expect the Apple Watch’s focus to be in the near future.

While we expect it to remain the industry’s best do-it-all smartwatch regardless of any marathon partnership, this may be the start of an even bigger push toward advanced metrics (and, probably, in turn, a continued move away from its Activity Rings) and further into the territory of dedicated sports watches.
We’ll likely know more when Apple unveils the latest features for the Apple Watch at WWDC 2026, expected to take place in June.
