Apart from Apple Intelligence and an impending Siri revamp, Apple has other plans for AI as well. However, this won’t be a completely brand new idea. According to a report from The Information, Apple is reportedly working on an AI pin-like device.
Apple’s AI pin sounds familiar
If you’re wondering why this sounds familiar, it’s because Apple wouldn’t be the first to launch an AI pin wearable. Back in 2023, Humane officially launched its AI Pin. It was a small device that you would wear on your shirt that also had the ability to project content onto your hand. Think of it like a smartphone, except you don’t have to hold it.
Unfortunately, maybe Humane was too ahead of its time, or maybe the simple answer was that the device failed to deliver as promised. Either way, it turned out to be a flop. But now, it looks like Apple thinks it might succeed where Humane failed.
According to the report, Apple’s device would be shaped similar to the AirTag, but slightly thicker. Based on the rumored prototype, it has a body made out of glass and aluminum and packs two cameras, three microphones, a speaker, a button along the edge, and a magnetic charger on the back.
It almost sounds like a smartphone, just without a built-in display. It is unclear how this device would fit into Apple’s ecosystem, but it sounds like it has the potential to be some kind of companion device for the iPhone.
When will we see it?
The report claims that the pin is currently in early development. This means there’s a chance Apple could end up canceling the project. Like many tech companies, Apple is probably working on multiple projects behind-the-scenes, many of which might never see the light of day. Think of the rumored Apple car, which was talked about for so long, only to be canceled.
However, what is real is OpenAI’s plans for hardware. The company recently confirmed its plans to unveil its first hardware device later this year. This would be a collaboration between OpenAI and Jony Ive, Apple’s former head of design. While it is unclear what device this could be, some are speculating it could be an AI-powered pair of earbuds.
