Early life and background

Aaliyah Qureishi was born on 19 October and raised in Mumbai. She attended Dhirubhai Ambani International School in the city before studying at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Her father is Saif Qureishi, an entrepreneur, and her mother is Rauzat Qureishi, who works as an acupuncturist. Aaliyah is the eldest sibling mentioned alongside her sister Shaazia Qureishi, who is a pilates teacher.

Career

Music came early for Qureishi. She has said she began writing songs as a child and uploaded her first known track, "So I Sleep," to her YouTube channel in 2018 under the moniker Jhalli. Over the next several years she released singles including "Peace" (2019), "Mukaddar" (2022), "Paraye" (2023) and "Don't Come Back" (2023). In 2022 she compiled six songs into an extended play titled Why Should I?, which contains the tracks Dream Girl, Stupid Games, Let Me Be Ur Girl, Why Should I (interlude), Hurricane and Insecurity.

Qureishi has taken her music onstage, performing live at concerts in India and abroad. In November 2020 she organised a concert explicitly in support of the LGBTQIA+ community, reflecting an early interest in public music events and causes.

Acting followed her music work. Qureishi made her on-screen debut in the Netflix English-language Indian comedy-drama web series Eternally Confused and Eager for Love (2022), appearing as the character Jia. She then transitioned to mainstream Hindi cinema with a role in the 2023 Bollywood film Jawan, in which she played Janvi alongside the film's lead cast. During promotion for Jawan, her image was projected on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai as part of the film's publicity activities.
