Early life and background
Aamir Liaquat Hussain was born on 5 July 1971 in Karachi, Pakistan. He was raised in Karachi and identified professionally as Pakistani. His formal studies included a medical degree (MBBS) from Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro. He later pursued studies in Islamic disciplines, holding a Master of Arts in Islamic Studies from Trinity College Dublin and a PhD in Islamic Studies from Malaya, Spain, as recorded in public material.

Career
Hussain built a multi-faceted public career that spanned politics, television and occasional acting. Early on he worked as a radio jockey on FM 101 and began his television career at Pakistan Television Corporation. He was an early contributor to Geo TV at its founding in 2001, where he hosted religious programming including Aalim Online. Over the years he moved between networks: he left Geo in 2010 to take leadership roles at ARY QTV and ARY Digital Network, serving as managing director and executive director while fronting the religious show Aalim Aur Aalam. He later returned to Geo to present Ramadan programmes such as Pehchan Ramazan (2012) and Amaan Ramazan (2013), and held the post of vice president at Geo TV in January 2014. He also presented popular entertainment formats including the game show Inaam Ghar.

On television he remained especially associated with Ramadan transmissions — suhur and iftar shows — and was widely recognized as one of Pakistan’s prominent TV anchors. In 2016 he launched a game show, Inaam Ghar, and in April 2020 he was hosting Jeeway Pakistan, a game programme on Express TV.

In politics, Hussain was elected to Pakistan’s National Assembly in 2002 as a member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) from NA-249 (Karachi-XI). In September 2004 he was appointed Minister of State for Religious Affairs, Zakat, and Ushr Division in the cabinet of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. He served in that role until mid-2007. His time in politics included moments of controversy that affected his standing within his party; MQM asked him to step down in 2007, and he later left active politics. He joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in March 2018.

Hussain also had ties to philanthropic work and established the Memhooda Sultana Foundation. He was featured in lists of influential Muslims internationally between 2013 and 2015.

Hussain’s public image combined popularity with repeated controversies. He was a high-profile television personality whose programmes often drew large audiences, but several of his broadcasts and public statements provoked strong criticism. Media regulators and law-enforcement agencies intervened at times: in 2016, PEMRA imposed a temporary suspension on one of his Ramadan shows and later issued directives linked to viewer complaints; authorities also placed restrictions on his movement after legal actions connected to allegations of hate speech. Hussain’s television work extended toward entertainment and film projects. In 2016 he was reported to be set to make a cinema debut in a film by Syed Noor, and in 2019 he announced a planned role portraying Burhan Wani in a film about the Kashmir crisis.

Hussain’s family background included his father, Sheikh Liaquat Hussain, who was a politician, and his mother, Ghousia Mehmooda Sultana. He was married multiple times; publicly listed spouses include Syeda Bushra Iqbal, Syeda Tuba Aamir and Syeda Dania Shah. He had at least two children, a son named Ahmed Aamir and a daughter named Dua Aamir. He described himself as a Muslim and his hometown was Karachi.

Death
Aamir Liaquat Hussain died on 9 June 2022 at Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi at the age of 50. Reports at the time cited a suspected cardiac arrest; an autopsy was later scheduled by court order to determine the precise cause of the sudden death.
