Aanjjan Srivastav was born on 2 June 1948 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal. Raised in a family with roots in Uttar Pradesh, he grew up in Calcutta where his father worked for Allahabad Bank. Srivastav completed a B.Com and an LLB from Calcutta University before beginning a dual path that combined steady employment with a deep interest in the performing arts.

Srivastav began his stage work in Bengal, appearing in Bengali theatre productions such as Neel Darpan, Kayakalp and Anwar in 1967. While employed at Allahabad Bank as a clerk, he continued to pursue acting through radio and theatre, spending a decade with the Sangeet Kala Mandir and later becoming associated with institutions such as the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and Prithvi Theatre.

In 1979 he made his film debut in Gol Maal.
