Early life and background

Aaron James Finch was born on 17 November 1986 in Colac, Victoria, Australia. Raised in his hometown of Colac, Finch developed an early interest in cricket and progressed through Victoria’s youth ranks, representing Victoria at under-15, under-17 and under-19 levels. He also represented Australia at under-19 level and was part of the squad at the 2006 ICC Under-19 World Cup.

Standing about 1.73 m (5'8") with blue eyes and blond hair, Finch has been described as an aggressive presence at the crease. Outside cricket he enjoys playing golf and cooking.

Career

Finch made his international debut in T20 cricket on 12 January 2011 against England in Adelaide. His One Day International debut came on 11 January 2013 against Sri Lanka in Melbourne, and he played his lone Test debut on 7 October 2018 versus Pakistan in Dubai.

Across formats Finch built his reputation primarily as a limited-overs specialist. In 103 T20 internationals he scored 3,120 runs at an average of 34.29 and a strike rate of 142.53, including a highest score of 172, two centuries and 19 half-centuries. In 146 ODIs he amassed 5,406 runs at an average of 38.89 and a strike rate of 87.72, with a top score of 153, 17 centuries and 30 fifties. His Test opportunities were limited to five matches, where he scored 278 runs at an average of 27.8 with a highest score of 62.

Finch also had a significant franchise and domestic career. He played in the Indian Premier League and other T20 competitions, appearing in 92 IPL matches and scoring 2,091 runs with 15 half-centuries. Domestically he has represented Victoria, Auckland, Australia A, and Yorkshire among others, and has been part of IPL teams including Delhi Daredevils, Gujarat Lions, Mumbai Indians, Pune Warriors, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. His jersey has included the number 5 for Australia and numbers 5 and 16 in various franchise and county assignments.

On the field Finch is known for an attacking approach and a preference for playing against India and England. His favourite shot is the pull. Notable milestones include the highest individual score in a T20 international at the time of that innings, when he scored 156 off 63 balls, and achieving one of the fastest T20 international hundreds (47 balls). He also shares a record for the most fours in a T20 international innings (14).

Finch announced his retirement from international cricket in February 2023. His last Test appearance was on 26 December 2018 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against India; his final ODI and T20I matches came in September and October 2022 respectively.
