Early life and background
Aatish Kapadia was born and raised in Mumbai and identifies as Gujarati by ethnicity. He attended Sarla Sarjan English School in Juhu and went on to study commerce at SVKM’s Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics, earning a Bachelor of Commerce. He later completed a Master in Management Studies at K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management. His father ran a textile business; Kapadia’s family experienced financial difficulties during his youth.

Career
Kapadia began working in theatre and first gained recognition as a playwright with the Gujarati play Aandhlo Pato in 1992. That stage work laid the groundwork for his transition into film and television; Aandhlo Pato was a source for the Bollywood film Aankhen (2002). He wrote a Gujarati novel titled Resham Dankh, published in 2002.

Across television and film, Kapadia has worn multiple creative hats: writer, director, lyricist, dialogue writer, actor and producer. He contributed as a screenwriter to the landmark Hindi sitcom Khichdi (2002) and appeared on-screen in the series in a supporting role as Jignesh. He partnered with Jamnadas Majethia to co-found the production company Hats Off Production, which became associated with a string of prominent Hindi television shows.

Kapadia’s television credits span Hindi and Gujarati programming. On the Gujarati stage and small screen he wrote and directed plays and serials including Action Replay, Ek Bijane Gamta Rahiye, Ladakvaya, Thank You Kokila, Aagantuk, Chhel Chhabila, Bhagya Chakra and Shodh. In Hindi television he worked on serials such as Alpviram, Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, Jasuben Jayantilaal Joshi Ki Joint Family, Ek Doosre Se Karte Hain Pyaar Hum, Pushpa Impossible and Wagle Ki Duniya.

As a producer, Kapadia’s projects include Khichdi, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, Jasuben Jayantilaal Joshi Ki Joint Family, Mrs. Tendulkar and the 2021 season of Wagle Ki Duniya. He also adapted his television experience to feature films and web series: his film credits include writing work on Mann – Soul’s Heart, Josh, Yaadein…, Aankhen and Waqt: The Race Against Time, and he served as a writer and director on Khichdi: The Movie (2010) and Khichdi 2 (2023). He contributed lyrics to songs in Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005) and Commando 2 (2017). In 2023 he created and wrote the web series Happy Family Conditions Apply, which streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

Kapadia’s work has been acknowledged repeatedly at Indian television awards. Highlights include multiple Indian Television Academy Awards — for Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and later milestone awards for both Khichdi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai — and recognition for Wagle Ki Duniya. He received Best Sitcom/Comedy Programme at the Indian Telly Awards for Khichdi and later a Telly Award for Wagle Ki Duniya. At the IWM Digital Awards he won Best Dialogues in a Web Series for Happy Family Conditions Apply.
