Early life and background
Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi was born on 19 November 1954 in El-Gamaleya, Cairo Governorate, Republic of Egypt. He grew up in the historic Gamaleya neighborhood near al-Azhar Mosque, a setting he has described as multicultural in his childhood memories. His father, Said Hussein Khalili al-Sisi, ran an antique shop in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. He is one of several siblings, and his extended family included relatives who worked in the judiciary and the civil service.

El-Sisi’s formal schooling included primary education in Ajman, United Arab Emirates, followed by preparatory schooling in El Gamaleya. He attended a military high school and graduated from the Egyptian Military Academy in 1977. His higher military education continued with courses and degrees at the Egyptian Command and Staff College, the British Command and Staff College, and the United States Army War College. Career

On 12 August 2012, President Mohamed Morsi named him minister of defence and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, replacing Mohamed Hussein Tantawi. He retained senior military posts through a period of political upheaval and, following events in 2013, served as deputy prime minister from July 2013 until March 2014.

El-Sisi retired from the military in 2014 after being promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in January of that year. He transitioned from military leadership into elected office and was chosen as Egypt’s sixth president on 8 June 2014.

Public profile
El-Sisi rose to international prominence during the 2013 political crisis in Egypt. After large street protests in late June 2013, the armed forces issued an ultimatum to political actors and removed President Morsi from power. El-Sisi became a central figure in the sequence of events that followed, addressing supporters and calling for public mandates for security measures.
