Abdul Malik Biography

Afghan opening batsman Abdul Malik rose through regional cricket to captain Amo, top domestic run charts and make international appearances across formats.

Early life and background

Abdul Malik was born on 11 March 1998 in Baghlan, Afghanistan. Raised in his hometown, he developed an early affinity for cricket and progressed through Afghanistan’s domestic structure. He is Afghan by nationality and follows Islam. Physically, Malik is listed at around 5 feet 11 inches (180 cm) and about 75 kg, with black hair and black eyes.

Career

Malik is a right-handed opening batsman who also bowls right-arm offbreak. He made his first-class debut for Amo Region on 26 October 2017, a match in which he managed only a couple of runs in the first innings and was dismissed for a duck in the second. He played his first List A game for Amo Region on 10 September 2019, scoring 12. That same year he appeared in his first T20 match for Kabul Eagles, contributing 11 runs from 18 balls.

He progressed through several domestic teams, including Pamir Legends, Mah-e-Par Stars, Boost Defenders, Amo Region, Kabul Eagles, and Afghanistan’s emerging and A sides. In November 2022 Malik was named captain of the Amo team and led them to their first Ahmad Shah Abdali four-day tournament title.

Across the 2023 Ahmad Shah Abdali tournament he established himself as Amo’s leading run-scorer, accumulating 621 runs in six matches. That return included two centuries and two fifties, an average of 51.75, a strike rate of 72.04 and a highest score of 218.

In the 2024 domestic season he continued to be among the top performers: after the round-robin stage of the 2024 Etisalat List-A Cup he was the second-highest run-scorer with 340 runs from five innings. He then played a key role in the Amo Sharks’ success in the 2024 Shpageeza Cricket League, scoring 273 runs in nine matches at an average of 30.33 and a strike rate of 132.52 to help his side win the tournament.

Internationally, Malik made his Test debut for Afghanistan on 2 March 2021 against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi. He became the first Afghan player to record a pair on Test debut, being dismissed without scoring in both innings. Malik’s One Day International debut came on 22 September 2024 against South Africa in Sharjah. In his third ODI appearance, on 19 December 2024, he recorded his first ODI half-century, an innings of 84 from 101 deliveries that featured 11 fours and one six. That match was part of a dominant team performance in which Afghanistan bowled out Zimbabwe for 54, securing a 232-run victory—the nation’s largest ODI margin at that time.

Public profile

Malik wears jersey number 20 for Afghanistan and has used the same number for Amo Region. Beyond the scoresheet, his leadership in domestic cricket and consistent run-scoring have raised his profile within Afghanistan’s red- and white-ball setups. He is known publicly as a top-order batter who can build long innings and convert starts into big scores at the domestic level.

Latest updates

Recent seasons show Malik producing the kind of form that earned him national selection and domestic trophies. His century-laden 2023 red-ball campaign, follow-up List A and T20 contributions in 2024, and the milestone 84 in ODIs in December 2024 are the latest concrete highlights in his evolving career.
