Early life and background

Abdul Samad Farooq was born on 28 October 2001 in the village of Kalakote in Jammu and Kashmir. Raised in a family with a sporting background, his father Mohammad Farooq was a national-level volleyball player and later worked as a physical education master. His mother, Farzana Kausar, is a homemaker. Abdul attended Lawrence Public School in Jammu and later studied physical education at Sharirik Shikshan Mahavidyalaya, Koradi, earning a B.P.Ed. His hometown remains Kalakote, and he is an Indian national.

As a child he spent much of his time playing cricket in the streets, developing the aggressive strokeplay that would define his game. Early encouragement from his father led to formal coaching at Jammu’s MA Stadium Coaching Centre. He progressed through Jammu & Kashmir’s age-group teams, representing the under-14s for three years, the under-16s for two years and the under-19s for one year.

Career

Abdul made his mark as a domestic cricketer with a reputation for power hitting. In 2018, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan noticed him at selection trials in Jammu and selected the then-16-year-old for Jammu & Kashmir’s senior squad for List-A and T20 cricket. Pathan worked with Abdul to refine his approach, encouraging him to be more selective and build innings rather than always seeking big hits.

Abdul’s breakthrough performances began in early 2019. He scored 76 off 51 balls in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 match against Nagaland on 21 February 2019. He made his List-A debut on 27 September 2019 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Rajasthan and played his first Ranji Trophy match on 9 December 2019 versus Uttarakhand. In the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy season he was Jammu & Kashmir’s leading run-scorer, accumulating 592 runs in 10 matches and setting a record for most sixes in that Ranji season with 36.

Abdul is a right-handed batsman and bowls legbreak. He has been coached by Randhir Singh Manhas during his domestic career. Domestically he represents Jammu & Kashmir and was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the 2020 Indian Premier League at his base price. He made his IPL debut on 29 September 2020 against the Delhi Capitals and played 11 matches in the 2020 season, contributing important finishes in several games for his team. He is one of only a few players from Jammu & Kashmir to feature in the IPL.

Public profile

Abdul is known for his aggressive batting style and ability to clear the ropes, attributes that drew early attention and helped accelerate his progression from junior to senior cricket. His favorite batsmen include MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and David Warner, and he lists Salman Khan among his favorite actors. Outside cricket, Abdul enjoys singing and playing video games; a clip of him singing a Punjabi song has circulated in public forums.

Family and personal life

Abdul remains unmarried. His father Mohammad Farooq supported his cricketing ambitions, and his brother Tayyub is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Abdul credits Irfan Pathan with formative coaching and guidance that helped him develop more composure and selectivity at the crease.

Latest updates

As of 2020 Abdul had established himself in domestic cricket and appeared in his first IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad. He continued representing Jammu & Kashmir across formats and was the top run-getter for his state in the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy campaign.
