Early life and background

Abhijat Joshi was born on 12 January 1969 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He grew up in the city and attended Shree Vidyanagar High School before moving on to Shri H.K. Arts College, Gujarat University, where he completed his B.A. and M.A. in English. He later pursued a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Texas, Austin.

Before leaving for higher studies, Joshi worked as an English professor at C.U. Shah Arts College in Ahmedabad. He has also been active in theatre from an early age, writing skits and plays in both Gujarati and English. One of his stage works, a drama about communal violence titled A Shaft of Sunlight, gained attention after the 1992 Gujarat riots and brought him to the notice of film-makers.

Career

Joshi made his film-writing debut with the 1998 movie Kareeb. Early in his film career he collaborated with director Vidhu Vinod Chopra, working on projects that included Kareeb and Mission Kashmir. A later long-running collaboration with director Rajkumar Hirani produced several widely seen films for which Joshi received screenwriting credit, including Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014) and Sanju (2018).
