Early life and backgroundAbhijit Mukherjee was born on 2 January 1960 in Hoogly, West Bengal, and belongs to a family with a long political heritage. His father was Pranab Mukherjee, who served as President of India, and his mother was Suvra Mukherjee. The family’s roots include public service stretching back to his grandfather, Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee, who was active in the independence movement and served in the West Bengal Legislative Council.

He completed his engineering education at Jadavpur University, earning a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) in 1984, and later obtained chartered engineer qualifications from The Institute of Engineers in Kolkata in 2005. On 5 July 2021, Abhijit Mukherjee changed his party affiliation from the Indian National Congress to the All India Trinamool Congress, formally joining TMC leadership.
In recognition of his social work, Dr. D. Y. Patil University, Pune conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Science degree in June 2015.
