Early life and background

Abhilash Thapliyal was born on 24 November 1987 in Udhampur, Jammu & Kashmir, into a Pahadi family. The son of an Army officer and a homemaker, he grew up moving between cities including Delhi, Gwalior, Gurdaspur and Jaipur because of his father’s transferable service. He attended Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 4 in Jaipur and went on to study at Delhi University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication. He later earned a master’s degree in Mass Communication and Journalism from Sikkim Manipal University.

Career

Thapliyal’s media career started while he was still an undergraduate. In 2006 he began working as a radio jockey, anchoring a music programme on All India Radio. Over the next several years he worked across multiple FM stations: Tarang FM 104 in Hisar, Radio City 91.1 in New Delhi, Fever FM in New Delhi, Red FM in Mumbai and Big FM 92.7, where he hosted a self-titled show called Mumbai Ka Sabse Bada Struggler Abhilash. Early on he was part of Radio City’s City Ban Gaya Behtar campaign and hosted prime-time and morning shows.

His radio work was recognised on several occasions. He received Fever 104 FM awards at the New York Fest in 2013 and 2014, won a Best Radio Jock Across Stations Award and an Election Campaign Delhi Award at Fever 104 FM’s 2014 national conference, and earned a Most Innovative Show Award at the Goa Fest Abby Awards in 2015.

Alongside radio, Thapliyal branched into television and digital content. He made his television hosting debut in 2016 with the MTV talk show He Thand Rakh, and that same year he appeared as a presenter at events such as the GiMA Red Carpet, the Ghanta Awards and India Film Project. He has hosted high-profile sporting events including F1 and IPL coverage.

As an actor he began appearing in web series and films from 2017 onward. His first onscreen acting role came in TVF Inmates (2017), where he played the character Suckesh. He was part of the ensemble on Colors TV’s Entertainment Ki Raat in 2018 and made his feature film debut that year in Dil Juunglee, portraying the supporting role of Prashant. Subsequent screen work includes a role in TVF Aspirants (2021) as Shwetketu, the ZEE5 horror film Blurr (2022) as Chander, the SonyLIV series Faadu (2022) as Roxy, and a self-titled role in the TVF web series SK Sir Ki Class (2023). In Faadu he undertook a physical transformation to inhabit the character of a drunkard and has described how production crew members initially did not recognise him in costume.

Thapliyal has also worked as a voice-over artist for channels including Nat Geo, Bindass, Fox History, Hungama and Cartoon Network. He has been a campaign mascot for brands and events, notably Nestle’s Get Healthy campaign and the Delhi Daredevils Corporate Cup, and in 2014 was the face of Hindustan Times’ Campus ka Mahayudh.

His father passed away in 2021.
