Early life and background

Abhinav Gomatam was born on January 1, 1986, in Hyderabad (then in Andhra Pradesh, now in Telangana). He grew up in a middle-class family in the city and completed his schooling at Hyderabad Public School. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Vignan Institute of Technology and Science, graduating in 2008.

During his third year of engineering he discovered a passion for performance after taking part in a mime act at a college festival. That experience set him on a path away from a conventional 9-to-5 career and toward acting, although he initially balanced creative pursuits with the practical considerations of financial stability.

Career

Gomatam began his screen journey with short films. His acting debut came in the Telugu short Artificial (2012), in which he played the role of Manav. The film went on to win the Platinum Reel Award for Best Short Film at the Nevada Film Festival the same year. He also appeared in a Tamil short, Machan Enaku Iniki Kalyanam (2014), credited as Chandu, before moving into feature films.

His first credited work in Telugu features dates from 2014. Over the following years he built a reputation in Tollywood with roles in films such as Ee Nagaraniki Emaindhi (2018), Meeku Maathrame Cheptha (2019), Ichata Vahanamulu Niluparadu (2021), Sehari (2022) and Virupaksha (2023). In addition to film, Gomatam has expanded into digital work: in 2023 he played Rahul in the Telugu web series Save the Tigers, which was released on Disney+ Hotstar.

Training and stage experience

Gomatam developed his craft through active involvement in Hyderabad’s theatre community. He trained and performed at venues and programs including the Lamakaan performing arts theatre, Clockwork Film Production, UDAAN Performing Arts and Aham Theatre. He has spoken about the nervous excitement that accompanied his early stage work, recalling how he would look out for familiar faces in the audience before beginning a performance.
