Early life and background

Abhishek Banerjee was born on 15 November 1988 in New Delhi. Raised in a Bengali family, he attended KV Andrews Ganj for school and later studied at Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, where he completed his graduation. As a child he tended toward introversion, but an early experience performing as Lord Rama in a school play helped steer him toward a career in acting. After finishing his studies he moved to Mumbai to pursue work in film and theatre.

Career

Banerjee began working in the Hindi film industry in the mid-2000s. His first screen appearance as an actor came in the film Rang De Basanti (2006). He moved into casting work a few years later, starting as a casting associate on Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010). A year after that opportunity, he was offered the role of casting director and took that step at age 24; his first credit as casting director was The Dirty Picture (2011).

Over the next decade he balanced casting and acting. As a casting professional he has worked on projects including No One Killed Jessica (2011), The Dirty Picture (2011), Do Lafzon Ki Kahani (2016), Secret Superstar (2017), Pari (2018), and Kalank (2019). In 2017 he co-founded a casting company, Casting Bay, with partner Anmol Ahuja.

As an actor Banerjee expanded into web series and films, appearing in TVF Pitchers (2015), Mirzapur (2018) and its second season, Typewriter (2019), Paatal Lok (2020), and the feature Stree (2018). His portrayal of Vishal "Hathoda" Tyagi in Paatal Lok brought him significant attention. He has also appeared in independent and festival films such as Ajji (2017) and has taken part in digital comedy content, including a ScreenPatti sketch alongside Jitendra Kumar.

Awards and recognition

Banerjee's performances have been recognized at industry awards. On 26 November 2023 he won the Best Actor (Male) in a Comedy Series award at the Filmfare OTT Awards for his work in the web series The Great Weddings of Munnes. He also received the Best Actor (Male) – OTT film award for Stolen at the Chetak Screen Awards in 2026.
