Early life and backgroundAbhishek Chaubey was born on 30 March 1977 in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh. He spent his childhood moving with his family while his father worked for the State Bank of India, living in places such as Jamshedpur, Patna and Ranchi. Chaubey completed his schooling in Ranchi and later attended Siva Sivani Public School in Hyderabad for part of his early education before going on to Hindu College, New Delhi, where he graduated in English Literature. After college he relocated to Mumbai and completed a course in Film and Television Production at the Xavier Institute of Communications.
Career
Chaubey began his film career working with filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj. He served as an assistant director and co-writer on Bhardwaj’s early projects, contributing to films such as Makdee (2002) and later co-writing the acclaimed Omkara (2006) and Kaminey. Those collaborations helped establish him within Hindi cinema as a writer with a distinctive voice.
He made his directorial debut in 2010 with Ishqiya, a darkly comic drama that featured Naseeruddin Shah, Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi. Chaubey followed that with Dedh Ishqiya, a sequel that expanded the world of his first film and featured an ensemble including Madhuri Dixit, Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Huma Qureshi and Vijay Raaz.
