Early life and background

Abhishek Pathak was born on 1 July 1987 in Mumbai. He grew up in the city and completed school at Vrajlal Parekh Vidyanidhi High School & Junior College before attending Mithibai College. He also studied filmmaking at the New York Film Academy, where he earned a diploma in filmmaking. Pathak is the son of producer Kumar Mangat Pathak and his mother is Neelam Pathak. He has a sister, Anamika Pathak, who works as a photographer.

Career

Pathak began working in film in the mid-2000s. Early credits include assistant-directing on projects such as The Awakening (2006) and other Hindi films including No Smoking (2007), One Two Three (2008), I’m Afraid I Am Hitler (2008) and Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? (2010). He is also credited as an executive producer on Omkara (2006) and as a writer on the short film Boond (2009).

He moved into producing and producing credits under his banner include the Pyaar Ka Punchnama series, the Hindi remake Drishyam and the comedy Pagalpanti. His production work spans commercial and genre titles; among the films he helped bring to screen are Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011), Alone (2015), Guest iin London (2017), Section 375 (2019) and Pagalpanti (2019). In 2011 he launched Brain On Rent, an advertising and marketing agency focused on film and brand communication, and in May 2013 he became founder and managing director of Panorama Studios.

Pathak has also written for both television and film. He is credited with writing the television series Laut Aao Trisha (2014) and has a writing credit on the Hindi film Drishyam 2 (2022). He has described his approach to remakes as adapting the material to a different milieu and audience rather than direct copying, emphasizing changes to screenplay and sensibility when retelling an existing story.

Pathak received the National Award for Best Short Fiction Film in 2009 for Boond. He was part of the ensemble honoured with the Big Star Most Entertaining Ensemble Cast Award in 2015 for Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, and in 2019 he was recognised at the Mirchi Music Awards for Re-Created Song of the Year for the film Raid.
