Early life and background

Abhishek Ray was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, and grew up there. He attended South Point High School before moving on to St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in English (July 1999–June 2002). He then trained in fashion design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata, earning a diploma in fashion designing (July 2002–June 2005).

Career

Soon after finishing his studies, Ray began working in the fashion industry. In June 2005 he joined Ekru Alluring Designs as Creative Head, a post he held until July 2014. While at Ekru and in later roles, he developed experience across Indian ethnic wear, couture and menswear with a particular focus on embroidery, surface ornamentation and blending contemporary silhouettes with traditional textiles.

In July 2014 Ray co‑founded his own label, Abhishek Ray Creations, serving as Creative Head alongside business partner Abhilasha Shaw Arora. The label has presented pieces at major Indian fashion events and has been modelled and promoted by Indian actors and models. Around the same period he moved into a role as Executive Design Head for bridals and trousseau at Ruceru Couture Private Limited (August 2014–October 2016).

Alongside his design practice, Ray has been active in fashion education. He has served as a guest faculty member at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata (September–December 2010), as freelance faculty at INIFD branches (May 2017–May 2018), and held positions at other institutes including Gurukul School of Design and NSHM Knowledge Campus. In July 2019 he joined Amity University’s School of Fashion Technology in Kolkata as an adjunct faculty member. His teaching work complements his industry practice and positions him as both designer and mentor.

Design influences and practice

Ray has said he draws inspiration from both international and Indian designers and from classic Indian screen icons. His work covers prêt, luxury‑prêt and couture, and often emphasises handwork and ornamentation. His collections have been shown at Lakme and Wills Fashion Weeks and frequently feature traditional Bengali and North Indian references interpreted through contemporary silhouettes.
