Abhishek Singh (IAS) Biography
Abhishek Singh is an Indian former civil servant turned social entrepreneur, actor and performer. A 2011-batch officer who served in both IPS and IAS roles
Early life and backgroundAbhishek Singh was born on 22 February 1983 in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his schooling in Uttar Pradesh and went on to study at the School of Open Learning (formerly the School of Correspondence & Continuing Education) at Delhi University, earning a B.Com degree. His father is Kripa Shankar Singh, a retired Indian Police Service officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, and his mother is Janki Singh. He has several sisters, one of whom is named Archana Singh.
Career
Abhishek began his public-service journey by training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy after passing the civil services exam initially to join the Indian Police Service. He served briefly as an IPS officer in Maharashtra, including a posting in Mumbai at the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police. Later, at his father’s request, he again sat the civil services exam and secured selection to the administrative service with an All India Rank of 94.
Allocated to the 2011 IAS batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Singh trained at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. His administrative career included roles as Joint Magistrate in Kanpur Dehat, Sub Divisional Magistrate in Mathura and Gautam Buddh Nagar, and a posting as Deputy Commissioner in New Delhi from November 2016 until March 2020 after an inter-cadre transfer to AGMUT. He also served as General Observer for certain constituencies during the Gujarat state elections in 2022.
While in service he initiated and supported several social-impact efforts. He adopted a neglected school in Shahdara, New Delhi, worked on school upkeep and repairs in underprivileged areas, co-founded the student think tank SIGMA with students from IIM Ahmedabad, and launched NGOs such as United by Blood in April 2021. United by Blood provided blood, plasma and pandemic relief support during COVID-19, and ran an initiative called OxyTaxi to supply oxygen cylinders free of charge.
Abhishek’s public-service tenure was marked by both recognition and controversy. He received multiple awards for public service and public-facing achievements, and also faced disciplinary actions at times during his career. After an extended absence from duty following his removal as an election observer in November 2022, he was suspended by the Uttar Pradesh government and subsequently resigned from service in October 2023.
Entertainment and public-facing work
Parallel to his administrative work, Singh pursued creative and public-facing projects. He made his acting debut in the short film Chaar Pandrah (2020), which was later noted at various film festivals, and appeared in music videos and web productions. His screen credits include a role in the Netflix series Delhi Crime Season 2 (2022) as an IAS officer, appearances in music videos such as Dil Tod Ke and Tujhe Bhoolna Toh Chaaha, and participation in other music projects and videos in 2021 and 2023. In 2023 he released a rap single, Third Party, and was involved in music videos featuring other performers.
Abhishek has also participated in fashion shows and public speaking. He walked at Lakme Fashion Week and at the Manish Malhotra Mijwan Couture Fashion Show in 2022, delivered a TEDx talk in June 2022, and was named among The Times of India’s 40 Under 40 Leaders in July 2023.
Public profile
Singh’s public image blends administration, activism and entertainment. He founded the No Shame Movement in October 2022 to assist women facing intimate-content leaks by former partners, an initiative that attracted public endorsements. He has been recognized with awards including lifestyle and inspiring-person honors and received a certificate of appreciation for public service.
His public life also included disciplinary disputes: in 2014 he was suspended briefly over an alleged incident while posted as SDM of Mathura; the state later lifted that suspension. In November 2022 the Election Commission removed him from observer duties after a social-media post featuring an official vehicle, and the subsequent period of unauthorized absence led to suspension and his eventual resignation in 2023.

Abhishek Singh married Durga Shakti Nagpal, a 2010-batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, in 2012. The couple have two daughters, Digara and Dania. Singh is known to enjoy reading and riding bikes; he is a Royal Enfield enthusiast. Physically, he is listed as approximately 188 cm tall and about 70 kg in weight, with dark brown eyes and black hair.
