Early life and background

Abhishek Verma was born on 26 June 1989 in New Delhi and grew up in Model Town. He attended the government school in Model Town before going on to study at Hansraj College, University of Delhi. Verma began practising archery in 2002 after a school physical training teacher suggested the sport. Prior to focusing on archery he had played lawn tennis, but that option ended when his family could not afford the equipment.

He joined the Sports Authority of India in 2006, which helped him take part in national competitions and develop as a competitive archer. Verma later balanced his sporting career with a professional role in the Income Tax Department, where he serves as an Assistant Commissioner.

Career

Verma made his international debut at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. At that event he was part of the Indian men’s compound team that won the gold medal, and he also finished with an individual silver. Over the following years he became a regular on the international circuit, earning medals at Asian Games, Asian Archery Championships, Archery World Cups and World Archery Championships.

At the Asian Archery Championships and other continental events Verma has collected multiple golds in individual, team and mixed team categories, including a standout performance in Taipei in 2013 where he won individual, mixed team and team titles. At World Cup stages he has reached podiums across several years, with highlights that include golds in individual and team events at venues such as Wroclaw, Shanghai, Paris and Gwangju, and multiple bronze and silver medals at other stops. He was part of India’s medal-winning team at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, taking gold in the men’s team event and silver in the individual event.

At the World Archery Championships he contributed to India’s mixed team success with podium finishes, and at national level he has been a top performer at Senior National Championships and the National Games, including multiple medals in 2022 and a strong showing in 2023.
