Early life and backgroundAbhishek Verma was born on 1 August 1989 in Panipat, Haryana. The son of Ashok Kumar Verma and Kusum Verma, he grew up in a family that moved across districts of Haryana due to his father’s judicial postings. Verma participated in multiple sports during his school years, including state-level badminton, and carried a general athletic interest into adulthood.
He first encountered a shooting range in Hisar in 2014 and began practising there. What began as a pastime evolved into a committed pursuit after encouragement from people at the range and after finishing fifth at the All India University Games. Verma practised long commutes by bus back to Hisar when his family was posted elsewhere and later trained at shooting academies in Haryana, including the Eklavya Shooting Academy and Yaduvanshi Shooting Sports Academy. He has a BTech in computer science and also holds a law degree; in 2021 he received a provisional enrolment certificate from the Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana and expressed an interest in practising as a cybercrime lawyer.
Career
Verma is an air pistol specialist who competes primarily in 10 m events, including AP60, APMIX and APTEAMM disciplines. He worked under or alongside coaches such as Jaspal Rana during his development and trains extensively—typically five days a week for multiple hours per day, often in two-hour blocks—and also incorporates gym work. He credits regular yoga and meditation for helping his focus.
His international medal record spans World Cups, Asian Championships, the Asian Games and World Championships. He earned gold medals at ISSF World Cup stages in Beijing and Rio de Janeiro in 2019, and was part of the gold-winning men’s team in the 10 m air pistol in New Delhi in 2021. At the Asian Shooting Championships in Doha in 2019 he won gold in the 10 m air pistol mixed team event, and he has silver medals from the World Championships team event in Changwon (2018) and the 2019 World Championship mixed team event in Rio. Verma also took bronze at the 2018 Asian Games in the men’s 10 m air pistol event in Jakarta-Palembang. He collected additional World Cup medals in New Delhi in 2021, including in individual and mixed team 10 m air pistol events, and a team silver at the 2019 Asian Shooting Championship in Doha.
Verma represented India at the Tokyo Olympics (the 2020 Games held in 2021). By 2021 he had reached the top ranking in the ISSF men’s 10 m air pistol category.
Approach and preparation
Verma’s path from hobbyist to international medallist involved steady, disciplined practice and an emphasis on technical consistency. He stresses shot grouping and technique over score-chasing, and uses music and mental routines to handle competition pressure. During the COVID-19 lockdowns he adapted to limited training by focusing on dry practice and home workouts while awaiting the resumption of range work.
Public profile
Verma is unmarried and maintains a public presence that includes interests beyond sport. He is a vegetarian, enjoys playing guitar and piano in his spare time, and is a car enthusiast; he owns a Nissan and has stated preferences for Range Rover and Lamborghini as favourite and dream cars. He has spoken publicly about his friendship with fellow Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary and the bond they share while travelling and competing together.
Family and support
Abhishek’s father, Ashok Kumar Verma, who has worked as a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has been supportive of his shooting career; family interviews describe long practice hours and a commitment that required giving up typical social pastimes. Verma has trained at multiple academies in Haryana and benefited from coaching support as he rose through national and international ranks.
