Early life and background

Abu Asim Azmi was born on 8 August 1955 in Manjeer Patti, Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He completed a Bachelor of Arts from Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University. Raised in a large family—the son of Haji Niyaz Ahmed Azmi and one of several brothers—Azmi's roots are in Azamgarh, though his political career and public life have been closely associated with Maharashtra and Mumbai.

Career

Azmi entered public life after a period that included legal difficulties in the early 1990s; he was detained in 1993 in connection with the Mumbai bomb blasts and later acquitted by the Supreme Court. He formally joined politics in 1995 and became active in the Samajwadi Party's work in Maharashtra.

Within the party he rose to lead the state unit, serving as President of the Samajwadi Party in Maharashtra from 1995 onward. He represented his party at the national level as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha for the Uttar Pradesh constituency from 2002 to 2008.

Azmi moved to electoral politics in Maharashtra, contesting both Lok Sabha and state assembly seats. After an unsuccessful Lok Sabha bid in 2004 from Bhiwandi, he contested the 2009 general election but was defeated. That same year he secured a seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and went on to establish a durable electoral foothold in the Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar constituency. He has won consecutive elections in that seat, including victories that extended through the 2009–2024 period. Azmi also holds the distinctive record of winning two assembly seats in one election and then choosing to represent the Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar constituency.

Outside elected office, Azmi is described as engaged in business activities and has been involved in philanthropic work. He founded the Haji Niyaz Ahmed Azmi Minority Educational Welfare Trust in Mumbai, an NGO that has cooperated with groups in France and Spain.
