Early life and backgroundAchala Sachdev was born on 3 May 1920 in Peshawar, then part of the North-West Frontier Province of British India. She grew up in a middle-class family and began appearing in films as a child. Before the partition of India she worked at All India Radio in Lahore and later continued with All India Radio in Delhi, an early part of her career that preceded her long association with Hindi cinema.
Career
Sachdev’s onscreen career began with the 1938 film Fashionable Wife. Over the course of roughly 74 years she appeared in well over 250 films, moving from early roles into character parts that made her a familiar face to Indian audiences. She featured in a range of mainstream Hindi films across decades, including Rahi (1952), Sabse Bada Rupaiya (1955), Sampoorna Ramayana (1961), Dil Ek Mandir (1963), and Sangam (1964).
Her performance as the wife of Balraj Sahni’s character in Waqt (1965) brought her particular recognition; a memorable song sequence from that film was picturised on her. She continued to work steadily through the 1960s and 1970s in titles such as Mera Naam Joker (1970) and Daag: A Poem of Love (1973), and remained active in later decades with appearances in Chandni (1989), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) where she played the heroine’s grandmother, and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), cited as her last film.
In addition to mainstream Hindi cinema, Sachdev took part in international and parallel projects, including Nine Hours to Rama (1963) and The Householder (1963). Her body of work encompassed a wide spectrum of roles, from child parts and supporting characters to the elder matriarchs for which she became widely recognized.
Personal life
Sachdev married twice. Her first husband’s name is not recorded in the available details; that marriage produced a son, Jyotin, and a daughter. Later she met Clifford Douglas Peters, a mechanical engineer involved in electronics manufacturing, on a film set in Mumbai. Introduced by filmmaker Yash Chopra, the two developed a relationship and married. After their wedding she moved to Pune with Peters; the couple lived first in Bhosari and later in Hadapsar. Peters died in 2002, after which Sachdev lived alone in Pune.
Later years and health
In September 2011 Sachdev sustained a broken leg after slipping in her kitchen and received treatment at Poona Hospital and Research Centre. In October 2011 she was diagnosed with multiple emboli in the brain and was admitted to the same hospital. Her condition deteriorated, and she developed quadriplegia and lost her vision. Achala Sachdev died on 30 April 2012 in Pune. She was 91 years old at the time of her death.
Public profile
Across a long career she became known for reliably portraying maternal and grandmaternal figures and for a distinctive screen presence marked by dark eyes and salt-and-pepper hair in later life. She spent time meditating and listening to spiritual music and talks, particularly after the death of her husband in 2002. A few years before her death she transferred ownership of her Pune flat to the Janseva Foundation in exchange for care from the organisation’s founder for the remainder of her life.
Legacy
Achala Sachdev worked steadily in film for more than seven decades and is remembered for roles in some of Hindi cinema’s enduring titles. Her filmography stretches from early pre-independence productions through mainstream hits of the 1960s and 1970s to popular family dramas and romances of the 1990s and early 2000s.
Latest updates
Her final credited film appearance was Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). Reports note that while she was hospitalised in Pune prior to her death, few from the film industry visited her during that period.
