Achanta Sharath Kamal was born on 12 July 1982 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a family with a strong table tennis tradition, he learned the sport from an early age under the guidance of his father, Srinivasa Rao, and his uncle Muralidhar Rao, both of whom were involved in the game as players and coaches. He attended Loyola College in Chennai and holds a B.Com degree.

Career

Sharath Kamal chose to pursue table tennis professionally in his mid-teens, dedicating himself to training and national-level competition. He rose through national ranks in the early 2000s, claiming his first national title in 2003 and establishing himself as a dominant presence at the Senior National Championships, where he became a nine-time champion.

Internationally, Sharath Kamal has a long record of success at multi-sport events and on the ITTF circuit. He won gold in men’s singles and in the men’s team event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi he took the gold in men’s doubles alongside Subhajit Saha and also helped India to a team bronze. The 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast brought further success: a gold in the men’s team event, a silver in men’s doubles, and a bronze in men’s singles, plus a bronze in mixed doubles.

He has also enjoyed landmark wins on the international tour: in 2007 he became the first Indian to win the Pyongyang Invitational Tournament and produced a high-profile victory during the Japan Pro Tour. In 2010 he won the US Open Men’s Singles at Grand Rapids and later that year claimed the Egypt Open, becoming the first Indian to win a singles title on the ITTF Pro Tour. In 2020 he won the ITTF Challenge Plus Oman Open, ending a long wait for that category of ITTF title.

Sharath has represented India at multiple Olympic Games, including being the lone Indian men’s table tennis competitor in Beijing 2008 and qualifying for Rio 2016. At Tokyo 2020 he faced China’s Ma Long in July 2021 and was defeated after a competitive match.

Sharath’s club career has included spells in Germany’s top leagues. He played in the Bundesliga for TSV Grafelfing in 2011, for SV Werder Bremen in 2012, and joined Borussia Düsseldorf in 2013, one of Europe’s leading table tennis clubs.
