Early life and background

Acharya Satyendra Das was born in 1940 in Sant Kabirnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a family with close ties to Ayodhya’s devotional life, he spent much of his youth accompanying his father on visits to the temple city. Those early experiences, along with his father’s association with the sadhu Abhiram Das, helped shape his decision to pursue a spiritual life and temple service.

In February 1958 he moved to Ayodhya to continue his studies. He later completed a formal course in Sanskrit, earning the degree of Acharya from Sanskrit Vidyalaya in 1975. Around that time he embraced celibacy and took the life of a sanyasi, committing himself to work in service of Lord Ram.

Career

Following his studies, Das began teaching in the grammar department of Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya in Ayodhya in 1976, initially earning a modest salary. He continued to be active in ritual and devotional work in Ayodhya—conducting katha and puja and participating in festival rituals such as Navratri kalash installations—while balancing his teaching duties.

On 1 March 1992, Das was appointed chief priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya. His appointment followed administrative changes at the site and had the support of a range of local and national religious leaders. As chief priest he was authorized to select assistant priests and oversaw daily ritual life at the shrine. In interviews he described a demanding schedule that split his day between the temple and the mahavidyalaya: early mornings and evenings at the temple and daytime hours teaching.

Das remained closely involved in the site through turbulent years. He recalled the events of 1992—when the Ramlala idol was moved to a safe location on the morning of the demolition of the Babri Masjid—and later recounted his role and experiences during that period. Over time his monthly stipend as priest increased; after retiring from teaching in June 2007 he received a larger salary as chief priest while assistant priests were paid a separate monthly amount.

Public profile

As the public face of priestly life at Janmabhoomi, Acharya Satyendra Das was frequently called upon to comment on developments related to the temple. He publicly objected to the dissemination of pre-installation photographs of the Ram Lalla idol in January 2024, urging an inquiry and insisting that revealing the idol’s eyes before the consecration ceremony was inappropriate. He also appeared in public debates surrounding the preparations and ceremonies connected to the new temple.

Beyond his ritual duties, Das was known for his affection for the animals that live around the temple complex; he was often seen caring for the monkeys in Ayodhya’s temple grounds.

Personal life

Das remained unmarried and had committed to the sanyasi path. He had one brother and a sister who predeceased him. He listed Ayodhya as his hometown and held Indian nationality.

Later years and death

In late January and early February 2025 Das continued to be engaged in temple matters and public discussion around the consecration events. On 3 February 2025 he was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) hospital in Lucknow after suffering a brain stroke. He died at SGPGI on 12 February 2025 at the age of 85.
