Achinta Sheuli Biography

Achinta Sheuli is an Indian weightlifter from Deulpur, West Bengal, who rose from modest beginnings to win gold in the 73 kg category at the 2022 Commonwe

Early life and background

Achinta Sheuli was born on 24 November 2001 in Deulpur, West Bengal. He grew up in a family that faced financial hardship after the death of his father, who worked as a rickshaw puller. His mother Purnima and elder brother Alok supported the household through tailoring, embroidery and other manual work while the children helped as well. These early responsibilities shaped a disciplined daily routine that mixed chores, schooling and training.

As a child, Achinta stumbled into a local makeshift gym while chasing a kite and became fascinated by weightlifting. He and his brother trained under Astam Das at a small neighbourhood facility that lacked proper equipment. When their father passed away in 2013, Achinta’s brother gave up his own sporting ambitions to work and ensure Achinta could continue to pursue weightlifting. Achinta also contributed to the family income alongside his training.

He attended Deulpur High School and later joined the Army Sports Institute in Pune in 2015 after being noticed for his performance at the Junior Nationals. The path from a modest village gym to a formal sports institute reflected both family sacrifice and his commitment to the sport.

Career

Achinta competes in the 73 kg weightlifting category. Coaches who have worked with him include Astam Das, a former national-level lifter, and Vijay Sharma. Early in his career he earned a silver at the Commonwealth Youth Championship in Apia, Samoa (2015) and went on to win multiple medals at national and international junior competitions.

2019 proved a breakthrough year: Achinta won gold at the Commonwealth Senior and Junior Championships in Apia and claimed a national record in the Commonwealth Championships by combining a 143 kg snatch with a 173 kg clean & jerk for a 316 kg total. That year he also won gold at the South Asian Games in Kathmandu and silver at the Asian Youth Championships in Gifu, Japan.

His upward trajectory continued with a silver at the Junior World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent in 2021. In 2022 Achinta captured one of the defining achievements of his career by winning gold in the 73 kg event at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. He recorded a 143 kg snatch and a 170 kg clean & jerk for a 313 kg total at that event.

Alongside his competitive achievements, Achinta was supported through development programs. He joined the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports athlete scholarship in 2019, which provided access to physiotherapists and sports science specialists. He has also been part of the Khelo India program and received a monthly stipend under that scheme.

Public profile

Achinta’s Commonwealth Games gold brought him national recognition. After his victory in Birmingham, he publicly dedicated the medal to his coach, brother and family. The feat was acknowledged by senior national leaders. He is described as calm and determined by those who know him, and his coaches have praised his hunger for the sport and capacity to keep improving despite early physical disadvantages.

Personal life

Achinta is unmarried. His father, Jagat Sheuli, is deceased. His mother is Purnima Sheuli and his brother Alok has worked as a contractual employee in the fire brigade while supporting the family. Achinta lists simple pastimes such as watching films and riding motorcycles. His physical profile is listed at approximately 1.68 m (5'6") in height and around 75 kg (165 lbs). Eye and hair colour are recorded as black.

Latest updates

In March 2024, Achinta was expelled from the national camp at NIS Patiala following an incident on the night of 14 March 2024. That expulsion resulted in his exclusion from the IWF World Cup in Phuket, a mandatory qualifying event for the Paris Olympic Games, and affected his chances of qualifying for the Olympics.

Looking ahead, Achinta’s career remains defined by a rapid rise from a makeshift gym in Deulpur to the international podium, and by the support he has received from family, coaches and scholarship programs as he pursues further goals in weightlifting.
