Aditya Choudhary (world's Youngest Ironman) Biography

Indian endurance athlete Aditya Choudhary became the world’s youngest finisher of an Ironman 70.3 event when he completed the Bahrain triathlon on his 18th

Early life and background

Aditya Choudhary was born on 7 December 2001 in Mumbai. He grew up in the city, attended Balmohan Vidyamandir for school and later enrolled at the Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics, NMIMS. His father, Vikram Choudhary, is also an athlete. Aditya has one sister.

From an early age Aditya was involved in swimming; he began learning to swim as a child. He also developed an interest in music and has been playing the tabla since around the age of six.

As a youngster he experienced ENT problems that required medical intervention. He underwent adenoid surgery and had ear tubes placed as a child, and later had another surgery in 2012 that included removal of his tonsils. These health issues temporarily interrupted some sports activities and influenced his participation in contact sports such as judo.

Career

Aditya moved gradually toward endurance sports, combining swimming with cycling and running. He and his father completed the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon together in January 2014, an early sign of his long-distance ambitions.

He set his sights on Ironman 70.3—also called a Half Ironman—a long-distance triathlon that consists of a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike ride and a 21.1 km run. Aditya has said he decided to pursue the record in his early teens after encountering athletes who had set age-related records, and he trained consistently toward that goal, adopting a disciplined routine that included early-morning starts and a strict diet.

The qualifying age for Ironman 70.3 is 18. Aditya turned 18 on 7 December 2019, the same day the Bahrain Ironman 70.3 event was held. He completed the course in 6 hours, 5 minutes and 4 seconds, becoming the youngest person to finish that distance at the time. His preparation included guidance from Dr. Mihir Patki, an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who coached him for the event.

Following the triathlon Aditya continued to pursue endurance challenges. He has taken part in long-distance cycling routes around Maharashtra, including rides from Mumbai to Lonavala, Igatpuri, Pratapgarh and Amby Valley. He has expressed interest in further high-altitude and endurance objectives, such as reaching Everest Base Camp and cycling the Khardung La pass.

Public profile

Aditya received public recognition after his Bahrain performance. His achievement was noted by public figures, and his coach highlighted Aditya’s dedication and resilience. In interviews he described the emotional satisfaction of finishing the race and framed the accomplishment as the result of years of training.

He has also discussed lifestyle choices connected to his athletic goals, including a desire to adopt a vegan diet. Injuries and illnesses have interrupted training at times; in 2019 he contracted chickenpox and paused training for several weeks before moving into his college hostel to reduce commute time and maximize training hours. In 2021 he underwent a further surgery to clear nasal blockages related to earlier ENT issues.

Latest updates

After securing the record as the world’s youngest Ironman, Aditya has continued to target ambitious endurance objectives and long-distance cycling challenges. He has maintained a disciplined training routine and pursued additional medical interventions when needed to support his athletic performance.

He continues to train under the guidance of mentors in sports medicine and remains focused on expanding his experience in endurance sports and high-altitude cycling.
