Aditya Dhar Biography

Aditya Dhar is an Indian film director, writer and lyricist from New Delhi. He rose to national prominence with his directorial debut Uri: The Surgical (0)

Early life and background

Aditya Dhar was born on 12 March 1983 in New Delhi and grew up in the city he still cites as his hometown. He is a Kashmiri Pandit by heritage and follows Hinduism. Dhar has spoken publicly about having dyslexia, and has described how an early attraction to art and drama shaped his interests while he struggled with traditional academics.

Dhar spent significant time in theatre during his formative years, working with the Delhi Music Theatre group for nearly two decades. That grounding in stagecraft informed his move to Mumbai on 5 September 2006, when he began pursuing opportunities in film. He has recounted the difficulties of breaking into the industry, including periods of seeking work door to door and taking entry-level roles to learn the craft.

Career

Dhar’s career in cinema began with writing and lyric work. His first credited work as a film lyricist came in 2008 with Kabul Express, and he went on to write songs and dialogues for other Hindi films, including Haal-e-Dil (2008), One Two Three (2008), Daddy Cool (2009), Aakrosh (2010) and Tezz (2012). He also worked as a radio jockey during his early years in Mumbai.

He made a high-profile transition to directing with Uri: The Surgical Strike in 2019, a film he also wrote the screenplay for. The movie brought him widespread recognition and several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Director at the 66th National Film Awards and multiple debut director prizes from film festivals and industry award shows.

Following Uri, Dhar continued to pursue large-scale, commercially ambitious projects. He worked on The Immortal Ashwatthama, a film that was in production as of 2021 with Vicky Kaushal attached in the lead role. Later, Dhar wrote and directed Dhurandhar (2025), a spy thriller featuring an ensemble cast. Dhurandhar received praise for its performances, visuals, action and direction and achieved significant box-office success, entering the Rs. 1000 crore club worldwide. Dhar split the story into two parts because of the scope of the material; the second installment, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, released in 2026 and also performed strongly at the box office.

Awards and recognition

Dhar’s debut as a director earned him immediate formal recognition in 2019 and 2020 with awards for Uri: The Surgical Strike, including the National Film Award for Best Director and several debut-director honors. His later films continued to be acknowledged by industry bodies: he shared a Best Dialogue award in 2025 and a Best Story award (shared with Monal Thaakar) at the 70th Filmfare Awards for Article 370. In 2026, he received Best Director and Best Dialogue awards for Dhurandhar at the Chetak Screen Awards.

Public profile

Dhar has remained a public figure both for his films and for his personal life. He married actor Yami Gautam on 4 June 2021. The couple welcomed a son, Vedavid, on 10 May 2024. Dhar’s mother, Dr. Suneeta Dhar, formerly served as Dean and Head of the Faculty of Music & Fine Arts at the University of Delhi. He also has an elder brother named Lokesh Dhar.

Outside of film, Dhar has been involved in charitable efforts; during the COVID-19 pandemic he supported the We Will Survive campaign focused on relief for people in need. He is an enthusiastic cricket fan and has spoken about early ambitions to join the army, which informed his interest in telling stories about military operations.

Latest updates

Dhurandhar’s commercial performance placed it among the highest-grossing Indian films, and by early January 2026 the franchise had set records for Hindi domestic collections. The second part, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, also crossed the Rs. 1000 crore mark soon after release, making Dhar one of the few Indian directors to have multiple films reach that benchmark. As of 2026, he continued to receive awards and industry recognition for both writing and direction.
