Afzal Ansari was born on 14 August 1953 in Yusufpur, Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, and is identified as Indian by nationality. He completed his matriculation in 1969 and senior secondary studies in 1971. He went on to study at Post Graduate College, Ghazipur, where he earned a BA and an MA (completed in 1976). He began his political career with the Communist Party of India and won the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections from the Mohammadabad constituency on the CPI ticket in 1985, 1989, 1991 and 1993.
