Early life and background

Agam Kumar Nigam was born in 1947 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. From a very young age he was drawn to performance; he began singing in local productions such as Ramleela and other stage shows when he was only four. His childhood ambition was to make a career from singing, and as a teenager he even left home briefly to seek opportunities in playback music before returning to his family.

In 1968 he left Faridabad and moved to Mumbai to pursue singing full time. He later lived and worked in Delhi for approximately eighteen years, performing on stage and in orchestras before establishing himself as a recording artist.

Career

Agam Kumar Nigam built a career largely through live performance, orchestra work and later recorded albums. Early in his working life he travelled extensively for shows and sometimes accepted modest payments for performances. In Mumbai he found it difficult to break into mainstream playback singing during an era dominated by established vocalists, which led him to concentrate on live performances and regional stages.

He moved to Delhi after being invited to perform at a prominent singing event where established Punjabi and devotional artists appeared; the warm reception there encouraged him to make the city his base for many years.

Nigam released his debut album Uski Yaadon Mein in 2002. He followed that with a series of albums built around the Bewafaai theme: Bewafaai (2004), Phir Bewafaai (2007), Woh Bewafa (2008), Bewafaai Ka Aalam (2010), Phir Se Bewafaai (2015) and Bewafa Dholna (2019). The 2004 album Bewafaai in particular was received positively and marked a turning point in his recording career.

In 2009 he contributed to a collaborative album titled Pyar Kisi Se Na Karna alongside Tulsi Kumar and his son Sonu Nigam. He has also sung for regional cinema projects: in 2012 he recorded the songs "Beta Chhutal" with Omkar Singh and "Choliya Ke Taanka" with Rekha Rao for the Bhojpuri film Hamaar Saiyan Daroga.
