Early life and background
Agnimitra Paul was born Agnimitra Ray on 25 November 1972 in Asansol, Paschim Bardhaman. She grew up in Asansol and attended Loreto Convent School there before continuing her higher education at local colleges, including Asansol Girls’ College and Banwarilal Bhalotia College, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in 1994. She later pursued a Master of Business Administration at Jadavpur University and completed a fashion designing diploma at the Birla Institute of Liberal Arts and Management Sciences.

Before marriage she was known by her family name Ray. Her parents are Dr. Ashok Roy, a paediatrician, and Aparna Ray, who was Managing Director at Avishkar Diagnostic Centre. She has a sister named Ari Ray.

Career
Agnimitra Paul began her professional life as a fashion designer. After completing her diploma in fashion design while studying for her master’s degree, she worked with established designers and fashion houses, including a period working under designers such as Ritu Beri. She later launched her own retail label called Inga and operated a boutique in Kolkata.

Her design work extended into film costume design. She created costumes for several films in different languages, including work on Tamil titles and the 2001 Hindi film Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe.

In March 2019 she entered politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. That same year she was elected president of the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal. As part of her work with the Mahila Morcha she introduced a training programme called ‘Uma’ that provided self-defence instruction to women across 23 districts in the state.

In 2021 she contested the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election from the Asansol Dakshin constituency as a BJP candidate and won. Her victory over the Congress candidate was by a margin of approximately 1,800 votes.
