Ahmad Shah Durrani/Abdali Biography

Ahmad Shah Durrani, also known as Ahmad Shah Abdali and Ahmad Shah Baba, founded the Durrani Empire in the mid-18th century and ruled from 1747 until his ‑

Early life and background

Ahmad Shah Abdali was born in 1722 and is often referred to by several names including Ahmad Shah Durrani, Ahmad Shah Baba, and Ahmed Khan. Sources identify Herat in present-day Afghanistan as his birthplace, though some accounts suggest he may have been born in Multan. He came from Pashtun tribal origins: his father, Muhammad Zaman Khan Abdali, led the Abdali tribe and served as governor of Herat, while his mother, Zarghuna Alakozai, belonged to the Alakozai tribe.

As a young man he and his brother Zulfiqar entered the service of Nader Shah of the Afsharid dynasty. Under Nader Shah, Ahmad Shah rose from attendant to a command role leading Abdali cavalry, and he fought during Nader Shah’s campaigns, including expeditions to India.

Career

The assassination of Nader Shah in 1747 created a power vacuum that Ahmad Shah Abdali exploited to establish his own rule. In 1747 he founded the Durrani dynasty and became the ruler of what came to be known as the Durrani Empire. His regnal titles included Padishah-i-Ghazi (Victorious Emperor) and Durr-i-Durrani (Pearl of pearls).

Ahmad Shah’s early military moves included taking Ghazni from the Ghiljis and capturing Kabul. He launched a series of campaigns into northern India, mounting eight invasions overall. His forces engaged the Mughals, Rajputs, Jats, Marathas, and Sikhs in a sequence of conflicts across the region.

His first invasion of India in 1748 met with a setback at Manupur, where Mughal forces defeated him. He returned in 1749 and secured control west of the Indus. In 1752 he defeated Mir Mannu, the Mughal governor of Punjab, bringing Punjab and Multan under his authority. He continued raiding major north Indian centers; in 1756 he sacked Delhi, Sirhind, and Mathura.

His campaigns reached a decisive moment at the third battle of Panipat on 14 January 1761, where Ahmad Shah’s army defeated a large Maratha force led by Sadashivrao Bhau. In response to rising Sikh resistance in Punjab, he launched further expeditions, including an incursion that targeted Lahore and Amritsar and resulted in significant loss of life and attacks on Sikh religious sites.

Personal life and family

Ahmad Shah was married and had multiple wives. Recorded names include Mimtta, Iffat-un-Nissa Begum, and Hazrat Begum, whom he married in 1757 after capturing Delhi. His son Timur Shah Durrani, from his first wife Mimtta, succeeded him after his death. His father, Muhammad Zaman Khan, experienced Persian captivity prior to Ahmad Shah’s birth, and some family narratives place parts of the family’s history in Multan.

Public profile

Ahmad Shah is remembered as a poet as well as a warrior and ruler; he wrote poetry and carried the honorifics and titles befitting a founder of a dynasty. He is often credited with establishing the political foundations of modern Afghanistan through the Durrani state he created in the mid-1700s.

Death and succession

Ahmad Shah Durrani died on 16 October 1772 in Maruf, Kandahar Province. Contemporary accounts record that he was in his early fifties at the time of his death and that he was buried in Kandahar. His son Timur Shah Durrani succeeded him as ruler of the Durrani realm.
