Ahmed Shehzad Biography

Ahmed Shehzad is a Pakistani opening batsman known for scoring centuries in all three international formats. Born in Lahore in 1991, he made his senior ODI

Early life and background

Ahmed Shehzad was born on 23 November 1991 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Raised in Anarkali, Lahore, he grew up after the early loss of his father and was brought up by his mother. From a young age he was described as a shy child who developed a passion for cricket; he made his first-class debut for Lahore Shalimars on 24 January 2007 and attracted attention in youth cricket with a noted innings of 167 for Pakistan’s Youth side against England in 2007.

Career

Shehzad made his senior international debut as a teenager. His ODI debut for Pakistan came on 24 April 2009 against Australia, and he played his first T20 international on 7 May 2009, also versus Australia. Four years after his ODI introduction he earned a Test cap, debuting on 31 December 2013 against Sri Lanka.

Deployed primarily as an opening batsman, Shehzad has worn the number 19 jersey for Pakistan and in domestic Twenty20 leagues. He has represented a wide array of domestic and franchise teams including Lahore Lions, Habib Bank Limited and the Pakistan Cricket Board Patrons XI, as well as international T20 sides such as Barisal Burners, Nagenahira Nagas, Khulna Royal Bengals, Jamaica Tallawahs, Comilla Victorians, Quetta Gladiators, Barbados Tridents and Multan Sultans.

His international record includes several notable achievements: he is the only Pakistani batsman to have recorded centuries in Test, ODI and T20 international cricket. He also set Pakistani marks for T20 batting performances, including the most runs in a two-match T20I series (168), the most runs and most sixes in a single T20 innings by a Pakistani, and the first Pakistani to hit three consecutive sixes in a T20I.

Shehzad featured in major ICC events for Pakistan. He was part of the squad that won the 2009 T20 World Cup and played in the 2011 Cricket World Cup when Pakistan reached the semi-finals. He returned to the World Cup stage in 2015, producing a top score of 93 against the United Arab Emirates during the tournament.

In domestic one-day cricket he posted strong form on several occasions. He produced an all-round display in June 2011 by scoring 74 off 47 balls and claiming two wickets with his leg-spin in a match for Sialkot Stallions. In April 2018 he captained Baluchistan in the Pakistan Cup and finished as the side’s leading run-scorer with 251 runs in four matches.

Public profile

Shehzad has nicknames used by fans and teammates, including Shehzada, Shezzy and Selfie King. Standing around 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm), he is known for his aggressive opening style. Off the field he lists hobbies such as watching football and movies, and his favourite cricketers include Shahid Afridi, Javed Miandad and Wasim Akram. He supports Manchester United in football and has cited Cristiano Ronaldo among his favourite athletes.

Personal life

Shehzad married his childhood friend Sana Murad on 19 September 2015. The couple welcomed a son, Ali, on 20 April 2017. He follows Islam and comes from a Pashtun background. He is described as non-vegetarian in his food habits.

Controversies and setbacks

Over the course of his career Shehzad has been involved in several disciplinary incidents and controversies at domestic and international level, including a one-match ban in 2011 for dissent and on-field exchanges in later years. In June 2018 he tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board after the result.

Latest updates

Beyond his on-field achievements, Shehzad has remained a vocal presence in Pakistan’s cricketing conversation. In June 2024 he publicly criticised then-captain Babar Azam following Pakistan’s T20 World Cup loss to India in the United States, accusing Azam of favouritism in team selection.
