Early life and background

Ahsanuddin Amanullah was born on 11 May 1963 in Bihar, India. He studied science and law, earning a BSc with honours in Chemistry followed by an LLB from Patna Law College. He is of Indian nationality and follows Islam.

Career

Amanullah began his legal career after passing the Bihar State Bar Council examination on 27 September 1991. He practised extensively at the Patna High Court and represented matters before the Supreme Court and several high courts, including Delhi, Jharkhand and Calcutta. His practice covered a broad range of areas such as constitutional, civil, criminal, service, taxation, labour, corporate and forest law, with constitutional and service law identified as his specialisations.

He served as Bihar’s Standing Counsel from March 2006 to August 2010 and accepted government assignments representing various state bodies and public sector organisations. In August 2010 he became Government Advocate and shortly thereafter was appointed Advocate General of Bihar, a post he held until 20 June 2011.

On 20 June 2011 Amanullah was elevated to the bench as a judge of the Patna High Court. During his tenure he took part in significant administrative and legal work: serving as Amicus Curiae, chairing the High Court Legal Services Committee (formerly the Patna Legal Aid Committee on Criminal Appeals), heading the Juvenile Justice Monitoring Committee, and becoming a member of the Bihar Judicial Academy’s board of governors. He also chaired the Bihar State Legal Services Authority and delivered addresses such as a speech for IAS probationers at LBSNAA, Mussoorie.

Amanullah was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on 10 October 2021, where he served until 20 June 2022. While in Andhra Pradesh he was appointed executive chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority on 8 November 2021. He returned to the Patna High Court on 20 June 2022.

On 4 February 2023 the Government of India announced his appointment to the Supreme Court of India. He took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court on 6 February 2023 and will serve on the apex court until his superannuation on 11 May 2028.

Throughout his career Amanullah has acted for government departments, public bodies and private entities in a variety of forums, including tribunals and quasi-judicial bodies. He has appeared for clients such as Indian Railways, Unit Trust of India, Union Bank of India, IRCTC, various Bihar state agencies, and private corporations. He has also taken up public-interest matters on a pro bono or low-fee basis.

Public profile

Amanullah has held a number of institutional responsibilities beyond judicial duties: he served as Assistant Returning Officer in bar council elections, acted as Special Counsel for the Income Tax Department at the Jharkhand High Court, and was counsel for district-level administrations in state inquiries. He has been involved in legislative drafting and review for the Bihar legislature between 2006 and 2011.

His judicial decisions and positions have at times attracted attention. For example, in a bench decision concerning a municipal building near the Patna High Court, he was the sole member dissenting against demolition, urging that deficiencies could be remedied and post-facto approvals considered.

Amanullah is married to Zeba Amanullah. The couple have two children: a son, Areeb Amanullah, and a daughter, Sadia Amanullah. His parents, Nehaluddin and Ishrati Amanullah, are deceased. He has two brothers, Afzal Hussain Amanullah and Faizal Amanullah.
