Early life and background

Aisha Sultana was born on 2 December 1984 in Jessore, Bangladesh. She grew up in a middle-class family and is known to be very close to her grandmother. She has two younger brothers. Although born in Jessore, she is identified with Lakshadweep and has been residing on Chetlat island.

Career

Sultana began her professional life as a model, doing print shoots and advertising work. She also trained and worked in the visual arts: in 2013 she completed a curatorial research residency at Gasworks gallery in London and has been involved with the Brito Arts Trust run by Dhaka-based artists. In 2014 she received the Samdani Art Award.

Moving into film, Sultana worked behind the camera for several Malayalam directors as an assistant and associate director. She collaborated with filmmakers including Nissam Basheer and Lal Jose and served as an associate director on the 2019 Malayalam film Kettiyolaanu Ente Malakha. She wrote and directed the independent feature Flush, released in 2020; the film’s teaser was shared on social media by Lal Jose in 2019. In doing so, she became the first woman filmmaker in Lakshadweep’s history.

Sultana has also contributed to Malayalam theatre and has appeared in a number of stage productions. Beyond performance and filmmaking, she has taken part in local campaigns addressing proposed reforms and legislation affecting Lakshadweep.
