Early life and background

Aishwarya Babu was born on 15 June 1997 in Karnataka and grew up in the Bengaluru region. She developed an interest in athletics at a young age, beginning her sporting journey as a sprinter in 100m and 200m races before shifting her focus to the horizontal jumps. An uncle who was a decathlete and the coaching environment she joined during higher studies played a role in that transition.

She attended Alva's College in Moodbidri, where she completed a bachelor's degree and received focused sports training. It was during this period, through the Alva's Foundation, that coaches recognised her potential in the long jump despite her relatively short stature. That assessment led to a dedicated move into the long jump and, subsequently, the triple jump.

Career

Aishwarya has been coached by BP Aiyappa and was introduced to railway athletics pathways by Pramila Aiyappa, the 2010 Asian Games heptathlon bronze medallist, who later became a state sports officer and took charge of South West Railways. After a railway selection trial, Aishwarya joined the railways setup and trained under BP Aiyappa.

Her competitive record at national events includes multiple medals across long jump and triple jump. She won gold in the triple jump at the 2020 Indian University Championship in Moodbidri and also took gold at the 2020 Khelo India University Games. She recorded a long jump of 6.73m, surpassing the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard and setting a mark that was the second-best long jump by an Indian woman in competition history. At the same meet she produced a triple jump of 14.14m, which bettered the previous national record distance.
