Early life and background

Aishwarya Pissay was born on 14 August 1995 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. She grew up in the city while tracing her familial roots to Maharashtra. Pissay attended Mahila Seva Samaja Senior Secondary School and later studied at Surana College, Bengaluru, where she completed a BA in Psychology. She speaks Kannada, Marathi, English and Hindi.

Her parents separated when she was a child. At 18, after leaving her family home, she lived with her mother and began spending time riding motorcycles on weekend trips with friends. Those early excursions helped spark the interest that would become her profession.

Career

Pissay established herself across both circuit and off-road motorcycle racing. She trained formally at Apex Racing Academy in Coimbatore in 2015 and attended the California Superbike School in Chennai in 2018 to further develop her skills.

She has ridden for factory and sponsored teams, including TVS Racing, which signed her as a factory racer in 2017, and IOS Sports, which came on board in 2020. Additional sponsorship has included Mountain Dew, Big Rock Dirtpark (Bengaluru), and Scott Motorsports India.

Nationally, Pissay earned multiple top finishes, claiming titles in several Indian championships and events. Her domestic honours include wins at the Indian National Rally Championship and victories at events such as Rally de Hampi, Rally of Himalayas, CEAT Sprint Rally, Raid de Himalaya and Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship, among others.

Internationally, she made history in 2019 by becoming the first Indian to secure a world motorsports title when she won the FIM Bajas World Cup in the women’s category. During that season she won the opening round in Dubai, finished third in Portugal, fifth in Spain and fourth at the Hungarian Baja, compiling the points that gave her the women’s world cup crown. She also finished second in the junior classification of that championship, a standings table contested by male and female competitors together.

Pissay made her international rally raid debut at the Baja Aragón in Teruel, Spain in 2018, becoming the first Indian woman to compete in a Baja World Rally. She has competed in gruelling races such as the Raid de Himalaya, where she was the only woman to complete the Moto Xtreme (Group B modified) class in 2017.

Her racing career has included serious injuries. In 2017 she sustained a collarbone injury that required surgery with a steel plate and screws. At another event with the Sherco TVS team, she suffered a ruptured pancreas that forced an early end to that rally.
