Ajay was born on 26 September 1978 in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. He grew up moving between towns such as Vijayawada, Nellore and Tirupati because his father’s job required frequent transfers. During his college years he observed campus actors closely, an experience that influenced his interest in performance.

He attended college in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, and later pursued acting training at the Madhu Film Institute in Hyderabad. He also spent time at the Institute of Cost Accountants of India and is described as an engineering dropout, indicating a varied educational path before focusing on film.
