Early life and background

Ajay Alok was born and raised in Patna, Bihar, and identifies his hometown as Chainpur in Kaimur district. He comes from a family with a background in medicine and education: his father, Gopal Prasad Sinha, is a well-known physician and Padma Shri awardee, and his mother, Indira Sinha, worked in education. He has an elder sister, Jaya Sinha Kumra, who pursued a career as a corporate lawyer and talk show host.

Alok completed his early schooling at Loyola High School in Patna through eighth grade and then finished higher secondary education at CSKM Public School in New Delhi. He trained in medicine at Dr DY Patil Education Society's Medical College, affiliated with Shivaji University, Kolhapur, where he completed his MBBS.

Career

Trained as a medical doctor, Alok worked in clinical roles after graduation and later cleared the Bihar Public Service Commission examination to serve as a government doctor. He founded the Indira Gopal Institute of Medical Services and, in 2013, opened Udayan Hospital in Patna, reflecting his ongoing engagement with healthcare in the state.

Alok entered active electoral politics in 2003. He first contested the Chainpur Assembly seat in the 2005 Bihar Assembly elections on a Lok Janshakti Party ticket and again stood from Chainpur in 2010 representing the Bahujan Samaj Party. Although those bids did not result in victory, he remained involved in state politics and public debate.

In March 2012 he joined Janata Dal (United) and served as the party’s spokesperson and general secretary. In that role he became a frequent presence on Hindi and English news channels, offering commentary and taking public positions on political issues. He resigned as JDU spokesperson in June 2019 amid disagreements within the party, and his JDU membership was later terminated in June 2022.

Following his departure from JDU, Alok continued as an independent political analyst and critic of the state government in Bihar. In April 2023 he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in New Delhi and was welcomed at the event by senior party figures; upon joining he described the party as feeling like a family.

In 2013 he reported a theft at his home that led to police arrests and the recovery of valuables.
