Ajay Bhatnagar was born on 18 November 1964 in Delhi. He completed his higher studies with a master’s degree in economics. Identified with the Scorpio zodiac sign, Bhatnagar has maintained strong ties to his hometown of Delhi while serving across India in a career in the Indian Police Service.

Bhatnagar is an IPS officer from the 1989 batch, allotted to the Jharkhand cadre. Over a long career in policing and security, he has held a range of senior operational and administrative posts within Jharkhand Police, including roles as Additional Director General (Headquarters), Additional Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and Deputy Inspector General of the Special Branch at Police Headquarters.
