Ajay Rai was born on 19 October 1969 in Varanasi. A graduate of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth in Varanasi, he belongs to the Bhumihar community and follows Hinduism. His hometown and political base have remained Varanasi throughout his life.

Career

Rai began his political journey in the youth wing of a national party and first won election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1996 from the Kolasla constituency. He went on to win that seat in successive elections and served as the area's representative for multiple terms. After delimitation, he contested from the Pindra constituency.

Over the years Rai has been affiliated with several major political parties. He spent more than a decade with one party before leaving in 2009 when he sought a parliamentary ticket that was given to another leader. He then joined the Samajwadi Party and was named its candidate for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in 2009, but he did not win. In August 2023 he was appointed president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Varanasi he lost to the incumbent by a margin of 152,513 votes.
