He comes from a lower-middle-class family; his parents are Madhukar Baburao Rahane and Sujata Rahane, and he has a younger sister and a younger brother.

Rahane developed an interest in sports early on and practised at a modest local coaching centre when resources were limited. Outside cricket, he has a wide set of sporting interests—football, tennis, golf and badminton—and enjoys music. He also holds a karate black belt.

Career

Rahane made his international debut in T20 cricket on 31 August 2011 against England, followed shortly by his One Day International debut on 3 September 2011, also against England. He made his Test debut on 22 March 2013 against Australia. He wears jersey number 27 for India and has represented Mumbai in domestic cricket.

In the Indian Premier League, Rahane has played for Mumbai Indians early in his career (2008 to 2010) and moved to Rajasthan Royals from 2011 onward. He spent the 2014 IPL auction with a listed price of 4.5 crore. His retainership and match fees have been reported as part of his earnings structure: an annual retainership fee of Rs 50 lakh, and match fees recorded as Rs 7 lakh per Test, Rs 4 lakh per ODI and Rs 2 lakh per T20 match.

Rahane is noted for a calm demeanour on the field and favours the cover drive as one of his preferred strokes. A key turning point in his career came during the 2014–15 Border–Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where strong performances raised his profile and prompted comparisons to the steady Indian batsman Rahul Dravid. He has been coached and mentored by Pravin Amre.
