Early life and background

Ajit Bhalchandra Agarkar was born on 4 December 1977 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra. Raised in Mumbai, he attended Indian Education Society and Shardashram Vidyamandir for his schooling and later studied at D.G. Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce in Matunga. Initially known for his batting as a junior — including a triple century in an Under-16 Giles Shield match and a standout performance in the Harris Shield under-19 tournament — he developed into an allround cricketer after working with coach Ramakant Achrekar and adapting his game to meet team needs.

Career

Agarkar made his international debut in One Day Internationals on 1 April 1998 against Australia and made his Test debut later that year on 7 October 1998 against Zimbabwe. He was also part of India’s first T20I side, playing in the inaugural T20I on 1 December 2006 against South Africa. A right-arm fast-medium bowler who could swing the new ball and execute reverse swing, Agarkar complemented his bowling with useful right-handed lower-order hitting.
