Ajit Pramod Kumar Jogi was born on 29 April 1946 in Jogisar, Bilaspur, in what is now the state of Chhattisgarh. He hailed from an aboriginal Satnami family and grew up in the region that later became his political base. Jogi completed studies in engineering and law, earning a gold medal in mechanical engineering while studying in Bhopal. He was active in student leadership during his college years and later taught at Raipur Engineering College (now NIT) for a period.

Career
Jogi began his public service career in the Indian civil services. He entered the Indian Police Service in 1968 and joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1970. Over the next decade and more he built a long record as a district collector, serving at Shahdol, Sidhi, Indore and Raipur. He is noted in records for an extended tenure as a district collector and district magistrate before transitioning fully into politics.

In 1986 Jogi resigned from his administrative post and entered politics at the invitation of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. That year he became a member of the Rajya Sabha, a position he held until 1998, and took on party responsibilities in Madhya Pradesh, including the role of general secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee. He also served on parliamentary committees related to public undertakings, industries and railways.

Jogi won election to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 from Raigarh. After the creation of Chhattisgarh in 2000 he became the state’s first chief minister and led the government until 2003. He later returned to national Parliament as the MP for Mahasamund in the 14th Lok Sabha (2004–2008) and in 2008 shifted to state politics as the member of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly representing Marwahi.

In 2016 Jogi and his son left the Indian National Congress following disciplinary action and founded a new regional party, Chhattisgarh Janata Congress. Over decades he remained a high-profile figure in state politics and contested elections against rivals from other parties.
